Who actually picks up
Three national networks run free furniture pickup at scale. The Salvation Army schedules truck pickups for its Family Stores through its donation website or by phone — the most widely available option in the country. Habitat for Humanity ReStores collect furniture, working appliances, and building materials in most of their affiliate territories. Many St. Vincent de Paul councils also run trucks, and regional players — Arc Thrift in Colorado, America’s Thrift in the Southeast, many local rescue missions and hospice charities — pick up within their own service areas.
Goodwill is the notable maybe: pickup exists in some regions and not others, because every Goodwill territory sets its own rules. Check your regional Goodwill’s site before assuming either way.
How scheduling works
You book online or by phone, pick a date window, and leave the items accessible — most charities are curbside or garage pickup only, and drivers in many areas cannot enter homes for liability reasons. Popular metro calendars fill one to three weeks ahead, and end-of-month dates go first as leases turn over. Book the truck the day you decide to get rid of the furniture, not the week you need it gone.
You’ll get a tax receipt at pickup. You assign the value yourself — the charities’ published valuation guides are the standard reference.
What drivers will refuse at the door
Trucks routinely refuse items with rips, stains, pet odor, water damage, or pest evidence — if it wouldn’t sell on the floor, hauling it costs the charity money. Most also refuse mattresses and box springs (state resale laws), sleeper sofas in poor condition, entertainment centers and large office furniture (they don’t sell), cribs and car seats, and non-working appliances.
Be honest in the booking form’s condition questions. A refused pickup wastes the truck slot and leaves your sofa on the curb; if the condition is borderline, a photo emailed to the local branch settles it before the truck rolls.
If pickup falls through
For good furniture that charities can’t schedule in time, try posting free on local marketplaces — free items in decent shape are usually claimed the same day. For furniture past donating, most cities run bulk-item collection days, and paid haulers price by the truck-fraction. Selling and donating both beat the landfill fee.
