Donation value FAQs

How do I value items I donate to a thrift store?

You assign the fair market value yourself — what the item would sell for in a thrift store, not what you paid. Goodwill and The Salvation Army publish valuation guides with typical ranges; this calculator uses ranges in line with those guides for items in good used condition.

Do I need a receipt for donations?

Yes — get a receipt at every drop-off or pickup. For any single contribution of $250 or more, the IRS requires a written acknowledgment from the charity. Keep your own itemized list; the receipt is usually blank and you fill in what you gave.

What is the $500 rule?

If your total non-cash donations for the year exceed $500, you must file IRS Form 8283 with your tax return. Over $5,000 for a single item or group of similar items generally requires a qualified appraisal.

Can I deduct items in poor condition?

Generally no — the IRS requires donated clothing and household items to be in good used condition or better. If it would not sell on the thrift store floor, it should not be on your deduction list.
